The Mercury line of vehicles was intended to bridge the gap between the Ford V8 and the Lincoln line of vehicles and by 1949 chose the same body style of the Lincoln but with different headlights and front grill and that style became an icon of American hot rods of the time. In the movie Rebel without a cause the great James Dean drove a 1949 Mercury sedan and many of these fell into the hands of hot-rodders who chopped the tops and added lake pipes and large V8 engines.
