On april 17, 1964, the first mustang rolled onto the streets. Performance and style were its hallmarks and folks loved its long hood, short rear deck, and low profile. anticipating next year’s milestone, every 2004 mustang will have 40th anniversary badges on the front fenders. They also get special exterior and interior upgrades. Wind noise has been reduced on 2004 models through the use of improved sealing, and both the v6 and v8 engines benefit from some minor refinements. after all these years, the mustang still represents affordable performance and style. A base coupe, for example, retails for just $17,720 and cash incentives can knock a big chunk off of that. Mustang convertibles are popular and attractively priced. mustang gt models are a hoot to drive with their 260-horsepower v8 engines. Just don't expect sophisticated ride and handling. The mach 1 returns for 2004, boasting a 310-horsepower twin-cam v8, a sports suspension, and a shaker hood designed to remind us of the famous 1969 fastback. Production of the 2004 mach 1 will be limited, however. an all-new 2005 ford mustang is expected to go on sale in mid-2004. lineupbase models come with a v6 engine. High-performance gt models are powered by a v8. Each is available in coupe and convertible body styles. Convertibles feature a power top with a scratch-resistant glass rear window. The svt v8 produces 390 horsepower at 6000 rpm, with 390 pounds-feet of torque at 3500 rpm. It comes mated to a six-speed manual gearbox. Cobra comes shod with p275/40r17 tires and loaded with special interior and exterior trim. standard safety equipment includes safety belts with pretensioners to tighten the lap belt and shoulder belts in the first moments of a crash. Energy-management retractors gradually slacken the safety belt if necessary to help reduce the force of the belt on the occupant's chest. The rear fender air intake, for example, has sharp corners and pronounced lines; but the rocker panels curve out, and the fenders have pronounced front and rear wheel well arches. The front end features wraparound complex reflector headlamps with integrated side marker lamps, combined with a square-edged honeycomb grille and a chrome pony. Tricolor front fender badges recall the good old days, as does the prominent but non-functional hood scoop. In back, it's 1965 with vertical, three-element taillamps. gt models get unique hood and side-scoop treatments, along with fog lights and a rear spoiler. mach 1 is easy to spot with special trim that starts with its shaker hood scoop. Attached directly to the top of the engine, the black scoop rears its head through a squarish hole in the mach 1 hood. (hood scoops on gt models sit on top of the hood.) a bold low-gloss black stripe runs up the center of the powerdome hood to accentuate the scoop. In theory, the scoop is designed to channel fresh air into the intake for increased breathing and, therefore, increased power. the 40th anniversary package, a no-cost option for 2004 mustangs, is distinguished by arizona beige metallic performance stripes on the hood, lower rocker panels and deck lid. Arizona beige metallic accents upgraded wheels (16-inch for the v-6 and 17-inch bullitt wheels for the gt). The 40th anniversary models are available in an exclusive crimson red exterior, as well as black and oxford white, with body-colored, fold-in side mirrors. interiorthe mustang cockpit is a little quieter for 2004. New expandable foam seals designed to reduce wind noise are used around the body, particularly the outside door handles and belt moldings on both doors. convertibles and coupes offer about the same amount of room in the front seats. Either way, it's a cozy interior. There's enough seat-track length to accommodate tall drivers and just enough elbowroom to keep from feeling cramped. Seatbelts are attached to the seat frames so they move with the seats. The package includes unique floor mats with an embroidered 40th anniversary logo and a matching badge on the center console. the mach 1 tachometer and speedometer use a tall condensed typeface and more hash marks that make it harder to read than the gauges in the gt models. The instrument panel, center console and headliner are color-keyed. To turn on the headlights, pull out an old-fashioned knob on the left. The center console includes cup holders. svt cobra models offer front bucket seats with nudo leather trim and suede inserts. The driver's seat features six-way power with power-adjustable thigh and side bolsters, and power lumbar support. Clearly, these seats are made for serious, fast driving. Switches are on the right-front corner of the seat. The svt instrument cluster has been redesigned to include a boost gauge. The gauges feature titanium-colored faces and electroluminescent lighting. The cobra's gearshift knob is leather-wrapped, with a brushed-aluminum insert on the top, inscribed with the six-speed pattern. Metal-trimmed pedals and dead pedal are standard. the back seat is small, with only enough room for small objects or kids. Convertibles have even less hip and shoulder room than coupes, but about the same headroom and legroom. the trunk is small with an even smaller opening. Coupes hold just under 11 cubic feet worth of cargo, while convertibles hold just 7. 7 cubic feet. A split fold-down rear seat is standard and handy for hauling cargo. driving impressiondriving the ford mustang confirms it is a throwback to another era. A mustang gt has more than enough power to break the rear wheels loose. The firm suspension transmitted freeway undulations, and there is some side-to-side jouncing on rough surfaces, but this car makes us feel happy. the engine sounds so good, so deep and thunderous, it might be the most enjoyable thing about the car. First and still foremost. introductionthe ford mustang has remained true to the traits that made an instant classic of the 1964-1/2 original, even as it is entering the third year of its fifth generation. It's still relatively big for a sporty car, with plenty of available options, and small-block v8 power. with the latter, there's plenty of torque. It won't be mistaken for anything else. It makes a statement. The mustang has only two true competitors, the chevrolet camaro and the pontiac firebird. For 2001, the ford has added a value-leader v6 coupe in standard 16,805) trim. That makes nine different price points, and we haven't even mentioned the super high-performance cobra; the cobra is again offered in coupe and convertible styles, in one trim level. the mustang v6 is a 3. 8-lliter overhead-valve unit producing 190 horsepower. The 4. 6-liter overhead-cam v8 produces 260 horsepower, and mustangs that have it are called gts. The rear fender air intake, for example, has sharp corners and pronounced lines; but the rocker panels curve out, and the fenders have pronounced front and rear wheel well arches. The front end features wraparound complex reflector headlamps with integrated side marker lamps, combined with a square-edged honeycomb grille and a chrome pony. Tricolor front fender badges recall the good old days, as does the prominent but non-functional hood scoop. for 2001, gt models get unique hood and side-scoop treatments, along with fog lights and a rear spoiler. the mustang's arched roofline is pretty modern, but around back it's 1965 again with vertical, three-element taillamps. Wheels are available in 15-, 16- or 17-inch sizes, depending on model, but each features a flat-spoke design to complement the sharp corners of the body shell. interiorthe current-generation mustang has better seats than ever before, with longer travel, and seatbelts are attached to the seat frames so they move with them. All models feature reclining bucket seats. Leather upholstery is standard in the premium gt, optional in some other models. Running horses embossed on the upper portions of the seat backrests recall the deluxe 'pony' interior of the mid-sixties. The instrument panel, center console and headliner are color-keyed. for 2001, ford has redesigned the center console, repositioned the front cupholder, made the rear cupholder larger, while adding a tissue holder and a power outlet. Serious sound fans can opt for the 230-watt, 10-speaker mach 460 system, which comes standard in premium-trim mustangs and mustang gts, and is a $550 option in deluxe models. For 2001, it can be ordered with an in-dash, six-cd changer. driving impressionperformance is what the mustang gt is all about. Its 4. 6-liter, sohc modular v8 produces 260 horsepower at 5250 rpm, with 302 pounds-feet of torque at 4000 rpm. And it sounds great, whether cruising or at full throttle. Last year, the gt engine benefited from revised camshafts and intake manifold runners, and larger valves for improved airflow above 3000 rpm. A new coil-on-plug ignition system replaced the previous ignition for higher-energy sparks. mustang's 3. 8-liter split-port v6 engine develops 190 horsepower at 5250 rpm, with 220 foot-pounds of torque at 2750 rpm. All models, regardless of engine or transmission, have a 3. 27:1 rear axle ratio. the flexibility of both the v8 and v6 engines make them good mates for the transmissions, which have sufficient strength to take high-rpm shifts for the life of the car. Both transmissions shift smoothly. The bosch system works at all speeds: whenever wheelspin is detected, the system retards ignition timing, cuts fuel flow, and activates the brakes at one or both drive wheels, in that order. The car involves the driver. Most of the raw edges and choppiness of the previous generation have been smoothed out. The current-generation mustang was engineered for improved rear-suspension compliance, with longer wheel travel, which reduces ride harshness. A revised boost curve gives the steering a more linear response and better on-center feel than in pre-1999 mustangs. And the turning circle of this latest mustang has been reduced by three feet through changes to the steering rack, the lower control arms and front stabilizer bars. the braking system was re-engineered for 1999, also, with new aluminum twin-piston front calipers to reduce unsprung weight by a significant 10 pounds. The new calipers also contribute to greatly improved brake pedal feel, while the new master cylinder that arrived at the same time improved not only modulation but also the ratio of brake pedal travel to braking action. Abs, like traction control, is standard on premium v6s and all v8s. It can be ordered as a $730 package with traction control on all other mustangs except base-level, manual-transmission coupes. Abs helps the driver to maintain steering control under hard braking, a useful, though not necessarily advisable, feat in the mustang. summarythe camaro and firebird are slightly more powerful than the mustang gt. The mustang gt is also less expensive than either of the gm pony cars, by several thousand dollars. Only 1000 miles since restoration, 68,500 total miles since new. This is a fantasticrestoration of a solid, original car. Gauges work, as does the horn (new), wipers (new motor),lights, alternator, etc. I am the third owner. Mechanical: 351cleveland "q" code 4bbl, rugged c6 automatic and 9" posi rear end all rebuilt. Engine rebuild included hardened valve seals for unleaded fuel, mild cam installed, holley carb. Engine startsquickly and runs strong. No smoke, noises, or other issues. Runs at the correct temp no matter how hot it isoutside. Pulls like a locomotive with that cleveland torque and race-ready c6 transmission. This is afast car; it runs all day on the highway (3:50 gears) without revving it's heads off. New exhaust, fuel tank, fuellines, fuel sender, brakes, brake lines, upper and lower control arms, ball joints, springs front and rear,bushings, shocks, etc., etc. . Transmission shifts quickly, smoothly and without noise. Posi rear works asdesigned. The car drives and tracks straight with no vibration. Added during the restoration is a new, functioning,reproduction factory ramair system which was not available on the '72 351-4bbl (only available on the 351-2bbl thatyear). Engine and engine compartment look new. Body: all original panels, including floors. Car disassembled during the restoration. Bottom of car has originalundercoat in excellent shape with no corrosion underneath. Never in an accident. Body is arrow straight withexcellent panel fit, possibly better than factory. All painted panels brought down to bare metal and recoated withbase/clear coat in original color that has more shine than factory. No orange peel, absolutely an excellent paintjob. Correct satin finish black on hood and lower side panels. Interior: original optional deluxe interior with gauge package and console. Shifter rebuilt - tight and smooth. Has the optional fold-down rear seat that turns the car into a 2-seater. Updated seat belts - retractable shoulder harnesses like a modern car, but with classic materials and buckles. Not a smoked-in car. Important original options: power steering and brakes. They make the car a pleasure to drive.
