Cabin/Cottage
In 1930, packard took a big leap outside of its traditional comfort zone of luxury and prestige with the introduction of the overtly sporty, driver-focused 734 speedster. The 734 (7th series, 134" wheelbase) was based on a new, shortened and boxed version of the standard eight chassis, which was designed exclusively for this model. Built in packard's newly established in-house custom shop, each 734 received a hotter variant of the proven 385 cubic inch straight-eight engine. The engine was upgraded with a newly designed separate intake manifold, oversize updraught detroit lubricator carburetor, and a 45-degree mounted, finned exhaust manifold. These additions could push the new 734 to 100mph, so it also featured upgraded brakes with large, finned drums. Contrary to popular belief, the "speedster" name referred not to the body style, but to the sporting nature of the chassis. In spite of the exceptional performance and quality, packard only sold approximately 113 examples of the 734. The marketing team was unsure of what to do with such a high-performance machine, given the majority of packard clients preferred luxury and silent operation over outright speed. Chassis number 184088, this fabulous machine was delivered new to a mrs. Sealey from portland, oregon. The firewall data plate confirms this information with a stated delivery date of 7-7-30 by service & sales, inc. It isn't known how long mrs. Sealey retained her packard, but it was acquired by william f. Harrah in 1960, and it became part of his famous, world-class collection of motor cars. Harrah retained this packard for twenty-six years, this automobile a clear standout in a collection that spanned as many as 1,800 cars. Following its time with harrah, the car went directly to another important collection, that of general william lyon. General lyon was a noted connoisseur of important packards, and this car was one of the true flagships of his collection. While in his care, the speedster was kept in exceptional mechanical order by his team of full time mechanics, and it is said that general lyons enjoyed driving it immensely, calling it "a car for the true enthusiast". Since general lyons' ownership, it has been carefully inspected by packard 734 experts and found to be highly correct, still equipped with the original body (no. 442-26), chassis (no. 184088), engine (no. 184095), and other major components. Six exquisite new chrome wire wheels were specially built for this car and fitted with blackwall tires to provide the signature sporting character. The top is trimmed in black haartz canvas, atop a fully restored frame. Side curtains are also included, as is a clear plastic dust cover for the top. Bright red carpets are bound in black enhance the sporty nature of the cabin as well. Mechanically, this packard is fully sorted and well-prepared, with performance to match its exceptional cosmetic quality. In fact, of the 19 known 1930 734 speedsters, only 7 retain their original gearboxes, and this modification is widely accepted in the packard community, particularly for any car that will be driven and enjoyed as intended. The only other non-original component found was the front axle, though it retains the correct speedster finned drum brakes. Detailing on the chassis and engine is virtually faultless, as one would expect from a show-ready and lightly driven example. Having had just three owners in 57 years, this is an incredibly rare opportunity to acquire one of just a handful of genuine, verified 734 speedster runabouts in existence. It is a stunning motorcar with remarkable history in the hands of world-famous collectors and a restoration that is beyond reproach.

Cord had worked wonders at auburn in his relatively short tenure at the head of the company. When he arrived in 1924, auburn cars were staid, dull and unappealing. With a stroke of genius, cord revitalized the brand simply by repainting unsold stock in bright colors and launching a vigorous advertising campaign. As reward for saving the company, he was offered a seat at the director's table, but instead he bought the whole company and put himself in charge. Within a few short years, the marque's image was transformed, with sports stars, business moguls and hollywood actors seen in stylish auburn automobiles. Cord had carefully positioned the brand within his fast growing automobile empire by offering stylish performance cars at a much lower price point than duesenberg. For 1931, sales had continued to rebound despite economic conditions, and auburn introduced fresh new styling that was inspired by the designed alex leamy's cord l29. As a further boost to auburn, a new speedster was unveiled in 1931. The car featured a sleek look with its split radiators shell, split and heavily raked windscreen and signature tapered boat-tail. Cord was losing interest in building cars and looking to invest heavily in the field of aviation. Sales began to slump and auburn looked for a way to revive the brand yet again. Gordon buehrig was brought in to redesign standard auburns and charged with creating a new speedster, inspired by a duesenberg j he designed that was built by weymann. The caveat being he had to utilize leftover '33 bodies from union city body to save money. The new car utilized very little of the old bodies, mainly the mid-section of the cabin and top frame. The fenders, tail, and most of the cowl were all new and in the end, buehrig felt that this new car was even better balanced and prettier than the duesenberg that inspired it. Lycoming 8-cylinder engines were again utilized, with the ultimate version found in the 852 with its engine-driven schwitzer-cummins supercharger adapted by august duesenberg. The 852 speedster, with its lightweight coachwork and 150 horsepower engine could top 100mph, and each car was sold with a dash plaque emblazoned with the signature of the great racer ab jenkins proclaiming its performance. The auburn 852 speedster has become a truly iconic american performance car that has earned its place among the most collectible and desirable motorcars of the era. The story of this remarkable car picks up in the early 1950s when it was purchased by mr. Cal grosscup of auburn, indiana. Through conversations and written correspondence with cal grosscup jr., we learned that his father's auburn 852 was enjoyed by the family for several years and while in his father's care, it was handed over to dallas winslow at acd for a cosmetic restoration. Winslow made his fortune buying and liquidating failed industrial and automobile companies. He purchased the remaining assets and naming rights for auburn automobile company in 1938, and rather than liquidating what was left of auburn, he set up shop in their magnificent administration building and offered parts and services for the now-orphaned auburn, cord and duesenberg automobiles. The period correct air horns were added at this time and the rear axle was rebuilt using genuine nos parts from winslow's stocks. The car and its "rehabilitation" were featured in an article as well as on the cover of the very first issue of car life magazine, february, 1954. a copy of the magazine, as well as period photos provided by cal grosscup jr. Accompany the sale of the car. Grosscup recalled borrowing his dad's car and thoroughly enjoying the attention it brought, particularly from the local ladies! Like most good things, the grosscup's time with the auburn came to an end when cal sr. Sold the speedster in approximately 1957. The car then went to leo gephart, one of the founding fathers of the collector car hobby and one of the first people to consider car collecting as a serious business. In approximately 1962 the speedster changed hands from mr. Ed stolarcyk of new york; the car remaining in the stolarcyk family for the next 55 years. Ed passed the car on to his son mike in the early 1970s, who informed us that he thoroughly enjoyed the power and style of the auburn speedster, driving it at virtually every opportunity. He always maintained the car in good working order, and the restoration from the 1950s took on a wonderful patina through the years. After many years of using the auburn on the road, the car then disappeared from view for many years until now. Through careful recommissioning it now runs and drives, and the body has remained straight and attractive in its unusual but well-suited terra cotta paint. It certainly shows some signs of age but what is truly remarkable is that it has never been fully restored and its original drivetrain remains intact. It is a highly original, very correct example that has been recognized by acd historian and archivist randy ema, who has even found period photos of the car when new. With reasonably minor mechanical fettling, it could be made into a fabulous road car with a fantastic, care worn appeal. Yet its inherent value is such to warrant a full restoration should someone wish to choose that route. Regardless of this auburn speedster's future, this rare and massively desirable machine wears its history with pride and is ready for the next chapter in its remarkable story.

In 1930, packard took a big step outside of its comfort zone as well as deliberate swing at cross-town rival cadillac with the introduction of the sporty, driver-focused 734 speedster. The 734 (7thseries, 134" wheelbase) was based on a new, shortened and strengthened chassis that was designed exclusively for the model. Built in packard's new in-house custom shop, each 734 received a revised version of the proven 385 cubic inch straight-eight engine. The engine was upgraded with a newly designed separate intake manifold, oversize updraught carburetor, and a 45-degree mounted, finned exhaust manifold. It is believed that it left the detroit works with a victoria body, however that body was removed at some point and replaced with this high-quality and very accurate recreation of the factory 2-seat runabout, but the original correct speedster pieces are still present, the rear axle, the front axle, the finned manifold, the speedster carburetor, etc.ďż˝ the robust nature of packard construction meant that chassis would occasionally outlive bodies, so rebodies are not uncommon. In the 1962, this car joined the renowned william f. Harrah collection in reno, nevada. At some point during the 1960's or early 1970's, the boattail body was built by the renowned richard kingston of california metal shaping, using an original 734 speedster runabout as a guide.ďż˝ eventually, the packard found its way via hyman ltd to the collection of its most recent keeper, a passionate and knowledgeable enthusiast who truly enjoys his automobiles as they were intended: on the road. He has reported that since purchasing the car from hyman ltd, he has amassed an astounding 30,000km and declared it capable of 130km/h and to be the most sporting car he has owned next to his xk120. It presents in very good condition, a car meant for driving over show, yet still very attractive with good quality finishes and detailing. The two tone paint scheme is well suited to the sporting body, with black fenders and top surfaces accented by rich orange sides and subtle gold coachlines. The orange chassis adds an additional layer to the already attention-grabbing scheme. Paint quality is very good with fine finishing and gloss atop straight and well-aligned panels. The body wears appropriate accessories such as dual pilot-ray driving lamps, chrome depress-beam headlamps, dual c. Hall cowl lamps and dual side-mount spares topped with packard-branded mirrors. The radiator shell features a polished stone guard and is topped with the "adonis" (a. A. "daphne at the well") mascot. The chrome plating shows in excellent condition, with no signs of pitting or blemishes. Six chrome wire wheels are fitted with blackwall tires for a sporty look, giving the car enormous presence. The body is very accurately constructed, down to the small trunk on the rear deck and the offset driver's seat. Being a sporting roadster, the cabin is simple and purposeful. Brown leather has taken on a pleasing patina from use, but remains in very good condition having been recently conditioned. The steering wheel also shows a nice patina, the sign of a car that has been used and enjoyed on the road for many years. The cockpit is trimmed with a polished bright alloy rail, adding to the sporting flavor of the body. The big straight eight engine (wearing serial number 184009) is well detailed with clean and tidy presentation. Having been regularly driven, it shows some typical patina from use which only adds to the appealing, inviting nature of this great sporting packard. The engine retains its correct finned intake, finished properly in black ceramic. The cylinder block and head are painted correct packard green and the crankcase remains in bare cast material as original. The presentation is pleasing and accurate, with no major modifications for road duty. A recent gearbox rebuild ensures reliable and easy motoring. Having enjoyed regular maintenance and use, this rare and desirable packard is ready to continue thrilling its next keeper. It is fiva registered and eligible for numerous events worldwide. This is a rare opportunity to acquire a packard speedster, arguably one of the finest driver's cars of the period.

Brothers fred and august duesenberg are undoubtedly two of the most influential personalities in the evolution of the automobile. Their engineering prowess can be compared with the likes of harry miller, ettore bugatti and ferdinand porsche among others, and the machines that bear their name continue to be among the most desirable and valuable american automobiles ever produced. After all, the j was a great among greats, the fastest and most powerful american automobile, producing 265 horsepower (320 in supercharged form) at a time when other luxury cars could hardly top 150 horsepower. The sj and its short-wheelbase version could be considered the first supercar. But before the model j, and before e. Cord's takeover of the firm, there was the straight eight, commonly known as model a: fred and august's very first serial production model. The duesenberg model a (officially marketed as the "straight eight") was a very fine automobile that was saddled by lackluster business decisions by the company's bosses. The duesenberg brothers recognized they were better engineers than businessmen, and set to work in establishing a new company structure that handed the business dealings over to newton van zandt and luther m. The new owners established a new factory in indianapolis and work began on designing a new production car. A prototype was shown early in 1920, however following a last-minute redesign of the engine (fred decided an overhead cam should replace the original side-rocker arm arrangement) the initial buzz surrounding the car had faded, hampering sales. Much of the company's money had been spent on the factory, leaving little left over for actual production. Projections were for 2,400 cars per year, but that quickly became a pipe-dream when actual production was more like 1 car per day. But duesenberg soon found their footing and sales of the model a gradually gained momentum. The car itself was a true standout. It was the very first serial production car in america to feature an inline-eight cylinder engine - dubbed "eight-in-a-row" in period advertising. The engine drew heavily from duesenberg's racing experience, displacing 260 cubic inches (about 4. 3 liters) and featuring an overhead camshaft, crossflow combustion chambers, detachable head, and a healthy 88 horsepower output. Brake drums were of finned alloy to aid in cooling, another lesson learned on the race track. Ultimately, history was not on the side of the model a, while it is no doubt a brilliant automobile; it seems to have lived in the shadow of its more flamboyant model j siblings. This stunning duesenberg wears a stylish sport phaeton body by millspaugh & irish, the indianapolis-based coachbuilder responsible for most duesenberg a bodies. As this car was initially discovered, part of the original coachwork had been modified, though it has since been meticulously researched and restored in original specification, executed to the highest standard. The car, which has importantly received an acd #1 certification, is presented in a gorgeous tri-tone color scheme with a dove gray main body and dark gray fenders being subtly accented with a deep red chassis and wheels. It is an understated yet breathtaking look that suits the sporty coachwork very well. Dual side mounts feature upholstered covers and very cool period mirrors. Dual cowl lamps are affixed to the windscreen frame and a painted metal trunk sits out back. Bumpers and other bright trim are finished to a very high standard in keeping with the rest of the body. Door panels feature pockets with embossed flaps and the rear of the front seat is equipped with built-in wooden cabinets, presumably for storing a lap blanket for crisp morning drives. The dash is finished in black lacquer as correct and a duesenberg 8-branded warner de luxe instrument cluster sits front and center. The folding top is trimmed in black canvas and remains taut, with a full set of side curtains included. The engine is painted in a light dove-gray, which is correct for these early duesenbergs, as only the later cars got the signature bright green treatment. The engine is impeccably presented, a gorgeous piece of engineering that also delivers excellent performance out on the road. It remains very fresh and is ready to continue its show successes, and will surely provide a rewarding experience on the road, thanks to the astounding performance from the highly advanced eight-cylinder engine and impeccable restoration.
